Last Saturday night the Gasparilla night parade, which echoes smaller Mardi Gras parades, cruised down 7th Avenue in Ybor City. The city runs the parade very well. Unlike most Mardi Gras parades, this one kept moving. There were no long breaks between floats like the ones common when watching super krewes in New Orleans. Crowd watching was spectacular as Tampanians are even more aggressive about bead snatching than most Mardi Gras parade goers.
For all the fun I had at the night parade, watching the Saints pull off a spectacular Super Bowl victory was the best time I had all weekend. I posted an update, and added a graphic to the entry I wrote after the Saints won the NFC Championship to reflect their newest achievement. The Vince Lombardi trophy has never looked better than it did in Drew Brees' hands on Sunday night.
In other news, a huge tree limb fell across my street last night. My friends and I ran out and stuck bright reflective tape to the branch so that anyone coming up on it would notice it more easily. By the time we had finished taping the tree a police officer had stopped to check out the scene, so I ran in and got my camera. It really reminded me of Mardi Gras a few years ago, when the Endymion parade rolled down the uptown route and a huge limb was cut by the city to allow a particularly massive float to pass.
